Fish oil – its science in sport
The omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), such as eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) found in fish oil (FO), appear to have anti-inflammatory properties, primarily through their effects on the neutrophil and macrophage components of the inflammatory response. This may therefore be useful as a nutritional countermeasure to exercise-induced inflammation and immune dysfunction in athletes.
